The orca in this painting is named Tilikum. I saw Tilikum while at Sea World a few years ago in the underwater viewing area and painted him to appear as though he was diving down to depths as he would in the wild. The day after I finished the painting, Tilikum was responsible for killing Sea World trainer Dawn Brancheau. I named this painting "In Depth" not only because he is diving to depths but also because the incident made me take a hard look at whales and dolphins in captivity.
